supervisor requires a subordinate to participate in religious activities as a condition of employment.supervisor who fires or denies promotion to a subordinate for refusing to be sexually cooperative. This kind of harassment is generally committed by someone who can effectively make or recommend formal employment decisions (such as termination, demotion, or denial of promotion) that will affect the victim. Quid pro quo harassment generally results in a tangible employment decision based upon the employee’s acceptance or rejection of unwelcome sexual advances or requests for sexual favors, but it can also result from unwelcome conduct that is of a religious nature. Quid Pro Quo Harassment - "This for That" This fact sheet provides a brief explanation of workplace harassment, how to recognize it, and both the responsibilities of an employee who has witnessed or been subjected to workplace harassment and the agency that has been put on notice of allegations of workplace harassment. Workplace harassment may also consist of offensive conduct based on one or more of the protected groups above that is so severe or pervasive that it creates a hostile or offensive work environment or when it results in an adverse employment decision (such as being fired or demoted).ĭOL policies and procedures promote prompt recognition, reporting, and remedying of harassing workplace conduct with the goal of eliminating such conduct quickly and effectively, even in cases in which the reported conduct may not be severe and pervasive so as to constitute a violation of federal law. It may entail "quid pro quo" harassment, which occurs in cases in which employment decisions or treatment are based on submission to or rejection of unwelcome conduct, typically conduct of a sexual nature. Prohibited workplace harassment may take either of two forms. The Department of Labor does not permit harassing conduct by anyone in the workplace, including contractors. Under federal law and Department of Labor (DOL) policy, harassment by DOL employees of DOL employees based on race, color, religion, sex (including gender identity and pregnancy), national origin, age, disability, genetic information, sexual orientation, or parental status is prohibited.

He also leads the cast in the BBC series Luther and is regularly called the next James Bond. Blockbusters poured in from there as he landed a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Heimdall in Thor, Janek in Prometheus, and Stucker Pentecost in Pacific Rim. It wasn’t his first acting job, but with The Wire and the role of Stringer, Bella Elba was arguably the show’s most prominent antagonist, and in the years since the series ended, he’s become the biggest star to appear on the entire series.Īfter The Wire, the 50-year-old Londoner landed roles in films such as American Gangster and 28 Weeks Later, and then flexed his comedic muscle for a while, starring in the American version of The Office. On September 6, 2021, the 54-year-old legend was found dead in his apartment, ending his illustrious career. Then he became the star of the show “Boardwalk Empire”, “When They See Us” and played a brilliant role in “Night”. It was supposed to be a cop show, but David Simon soon realized he had a gem, so Omar’s point of view as a burglar with a very strict moral code and a rich personal life made him both a fan favorite and key. But Omar’s performance here made him a legend. Small roles in “Bringing Out the Dead” and “The Sopranos” didn’t help us understand how good Williams is as an actor. Fletcher, as well as King of Staten Island. More recently, he has appeared in Billions, Deuce, and Mrs. The Wire helped launch Lombardozzi’s career, and starring roles soon followed, including The Handsome, Bored to Death, and the downright brilliant Boardwalk Empire. Domenick Lombardozzi as Thomas “Herck” HaukĪs part of a duo that included Ellis Carver, Herc was a key player in the original wiretap group that formed in the first season. More recently, she has been featured in the acclaimed Showtime series Chi, the Amazon series Utopia, and the CBS All Access sci-fi drama Star Trek: Discovery. Sonya Son as Kima Greggsīefore The Wire, Son starred in films such as Perfume, The Mine, and Bringing Out the Dead, but like many of her colleagues, her role in The Wire proved to be a life-changing one.Īfter working on The Wire for all five seasons, Son continued to work regularly, often landing recurring and starring roles on high-profile series such as Brothers and Sisters, Solved Case, Body Proof, Burn Notice, Good wife”, “The Originals”. More recently, he’s been seen in films like Selma and TV series like Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and as Meghan Markle’s father in Suits and is set to take on some lucrative voice work on Disney’s Eureka. In 2010, he reunited with The Wire creator David Simon for a drama series set in his New Orleans home, Tremes. a curmudgeon from the Baltimore Police Department. Video of the day Wendell Pierce as Bank MorelandĪs Detective “Bank” Moreland, Pierce quickly became one of The Wire’s most frequent scene stealers, sharing a certain self-destructive tendencies with his best friend McNulty but finding ways to better hide it so he could keep his place as a gifted resident. He is set to appear as Prince Charles in seasons 5 and 6 of the Netflix hit The Crown. But nothing in his character and impeccable game turned out to be a cliché.Ĭritical acclaim won over the 52-year-old Englishman, earning him roles in major films and another acclaimed drama, The Lovers, for which he received a second Golden Globe nomination. The original protagonist of The David Simon Show, McNulty was a clichéd, alcoholic, self-sabotaging cop with deep-seated personal problems. McNulty (Dominic West) and Kim (Sonya Son) in The Wire Man, we spent millions of dollars in the pursuit of happiness, and found out you couldn’t buy it. “It’s sad that people have to get shocked into it sometimes, but there’s so many other distractions in life that we were tied in with. (Drummer Don) Brewer called me one time and said, ‘So you think I ought to repent, eh, Farner?’ He was joking around, but you can’t help but think-if you’ve lived enough years, as we have, and gone through the things we went through and some of those close calls on the airplanes-about God and what you’ve done with your life. “I was sitting there with my two boys at the house, crying in my beer, and I just said, ‘Well, Lord, I’m gonna try to find you,’ and I started looking for God again,” said Farner.įarner’s former partners haven’t found the same answer, but “I don’t try to lord it over anybody. A second and final band breakup in 1983 preceded the breakup of Farner’s marriage-paving the way for the desperation that led to his conversion. The trio got back together in 1981 for the first of two reunion albums. Grand Funk disbanded in 1977, and Farner recorded two largely ignored solo albums. “Those people recognize the spiritual connotations of a few of the songs, like ‘I’m Your Captain'-it was always there, the searching, wanting to do something good, wanting to find the answers just like everybody else.” We were more of a people’s band and didn’t get a lot of AM air play then. The die-hard Grand Funk fans who come to see me are the ones that started off with us back in ’69, ’70, ’71, when Grand Funk was a band that wrote about issues that were pet peeves of our generation-ecology, the Vietnam War. “As a matter of fact, for the most part, people felt that it was just a matter of time. Surely, though, some of the longtime devotees must be shocked to find out that one of the original heavy-metal stars-whose previous solo album was panned in the Rolling Stone Record Guide for its “naive politics and cheap hedonism"-has turned spiritual? We’ve sold hundreds of the new album on the road-to Grand Funk fans.” And I haven’t had anybody come up and tell me they didn’t like the new stuff. “But I want to be able to play my new (Christian) stuff and get their reactions to it. And I don’t want to rob them of any of those memories. with the top down on the convertible or wherever they were during that. “When people hear songs from an era, they tend to go back to when they were out on a date or driving down the back roads at 100 m.p.h. “The people who come to hear (the oldies) are getting some satisfaction as far as being able to relive a memory,” said Farner. Whether touring as part of the recent “Super ‘70s Fest” or hitting the club circuit on his own, Farner mixes the hits from Grand Funk-which was the first rock group to be awarded 10 consecutive platinum albums and which sold more than 25 million albums during its 1969-75 reign-with explicitly Christian material from his new solo album, “Just Another Injustice.” “But there are some songs I absolutely wouldn’t do.” “We do ‘Footstompin’ Music,’ ‘Are You Ready,’ ‘Loco-Motion,’ ‘Some Kind of Wonderful,’ ‘Closer to Home,’ ‘Heartbreaker,’ ‘Bad Time'-those songs don’t have any evil connotation to ‘em, and they don’t tell people to go out and get loaded,” said Farner by phone from El Paso, Tex. And as evangelical Christians, he and his new band will come into your town, but they won’t help you party it down. More importantly, though, its references to “getting it on” with “these fine ladies” and other hedonistic pursuits of American bands of the time wouldn’t fit very congruously into his set nowadays.įarner, 39, has joined the ranks of the twice-born. Part of the reason is that “American Band” was one of the few Grand Funk singles Farner didn’t write. 1 hit, “We’re an American Band,” however, will not be honored. Requests for Grand Funk’s first and most famous No. Old Grand Funk Railroad fans who go to Bogart’s tonight in Long Beach to hear the famed Michigan power trio’s former frontman, Mark Farner, can expect to have most of their hollers for the band’s string of hits rewarded. 45 years (June 5, 1976) Joe Gatto / Age "Imagine 15 years of not succeeding," Murray said. Check out the time when Impractical Jokers stars Vulcano and Murray took over our Comic-Con interview: Impractical Jokers airs Thursday evenings at 10 p.m. The Impractical Jokers first met in a religion class at Monsignor Farrell, an all-boys Catholic high school where they banded together and quickly realized that the best way to meet girls was through comedy in their school plays and improv classes.6 The Punishments Can Get Out Of Hand. The short answer is, Impractical Jokers hasn’t cast a full-time replacement for original cast member Joe Gatto, who left the truTV series at the end of the year. Noting he’d separated from wife Bessy Gatto, Gatto said he would be taking time away to “focus on being the best father and co-parent to our two incredible kids.” He concluded the post by thanking fans for their support and sharing his hope for new opportunities “to create new ways to entertain you.” How Tall Is Willow Smith? We could even schmooze about whether or not Jeff Kent has a case for Hall of Fame induction. Wherever Somers ends up, I’ll be among the first in line to call, lest I miss my chance once again. And, like Palmer, what he lacks in broad name recognition he makes up with his deep well of superfans. Somers’ callers dial in not to argue with him, but as a form of mutual engagement. As musician Amanda Palmer pointed out in last week’s installment of my book, a key to building a strong fan base is peer-to-peer relationships. While I’d be thrilled to hear Somers back on WFAN, even in a weekly spot, I think a good chunk of his audience has the tech smarts-not to mention the motivation-to follow him to another platform. He served as a therapist as much as a host, especially through the dark days of the early pandemic. Multitudes of Millennials grew up on the Schmoozer and called him into the wee hours. And I can confirm his fan base isn’t just fellow senior citizens. Though I don’t have a deep demographic analysis of Somers’ audience in hand, I’ve got a bevy of anecdotal evidence through my own late night listening so extensive it borders on scientific. A San Francisco native, he somehow ended up with an inflection that suggested he was born in a Brooklyn bagel shop. Most importantly, he treated his callers with patience and dignity, whether it was the wheezy Doris from Rego Park or the aforementioned Jerry from Queens. The Schmoozer, with his mellifluous voice-so soothing that, as a kid, my parents would let me leave WFAN on at bedtime-was the epitome of what made the station unique. But it was the quirky regionalism of shows like “Mike and the Mad Dog” that caused the station to take off. At WFAN’s 1987 inception, polished pros like Greg Gumbel ruled the airwaves. Ironically, by moving away from Somers, WFAN is undoing some of the magic that built the station, back when people said nobody would listen to sports talk 24 hours a day. And there’s a high level of engagement here: the latter sometimes calls in as “Jerry from Queens.”Ī rare photo of Steve Somers (Photo by Paul Zimmerman/WireImage via Getty) Browse his followers and you’ll find names ranging from rapper Pharoahe Monch to comedian Jerry Seinfeld. And slapping a number on his fan base doesn’t do justice to its eclectic and influential depth. With a solid 30,000-plus followers on Twitter, Somers has more than many other hosts on the station, aside from the drive-time shock jocks. Yet his approach has earned him scores of superfans. In an era when everyone seems fixated on “consuming content” that provides “actionable advice,” the Schmoozer’s mission is to delight and entertain first, and to transmit information second. He’s a storyteller and a humorist, one who’d rather joke about the New York “Icelanders” than predict who’ll cover the spread in tonight’s game. Unlike most WFAN hosts, Somers doesn’t spend much time dispensing advice related to gambling or fantasy sports. WFAN and its ilk appear to be phasing out older hosts in an effort to draw younger listeners, part of radio’s fight to maintain and grow audience amid competition from podcasts, streaming and the rest of the new media landscape. Somers is a perfect example of how radio executives still miss key aspects of the superfan economy (which happens to be the topic of the latest chapter in my new Substack-serialized book, We Are All Musicians Now ). Henry Bemis on an eight-hour tour of a graveyard.“Īs he contemplates suicide, Henry notices that the public library is still partially standing in the distance. They lie at his feet as battered monuments to what was, but is no more. A neighborhood bar, a movie, a baseball diamond, a hardware store, the mailbox of what was once his house and is now a rubble. Henry Bemis, who looks for a spark in the ashes of a dead world. When Henry awakens, he climbs out of the rubble to discover that the world has been destroyed in a nuclear holocaust. A headline reads: “H-Bomb Capable of Total Destruction” -and suddenly a massive explosion shakes the entire building, knocking Henry unconscious and spilling open his book (he was reading A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus by Washington Irving). The next day, Henry goes back down to the vault to read the newspaper. This contradiction is made potently apparent in the hopeless struggle of Henry Bemis. If leisure is the fertile soil in which high culture must flourish, it has struggled to find a home in the modern labor market. I remember bringing a copy of Great Expectations to read at one of my first jobs working a cash register. The tension between employment and reading literature is a struggle faced by every modern intellectual. She marks up a book of poetry so Henry cannot read a single word. Later he comes home to his shrew of a wife who prohibits him from ever reading –even newspapers are forbidden. He wears large, thick spectacles and is employed at a bank which forbids him to read David Copperfield even while isolated in the vault during his lunch break. Henry Bemis is a clumsy Geek, obsessed with reading books, but tragically he is prevented from pursuing his one hobby. He’ll have a world all to himself… without anyone.“ Bemis will enter a world without bank presidents or wives or clocks or anything else. A bookish little man whose passion is the printed page, but who is conspired against by a bank president and a wife and a world full of tongue-cluckers and the unrelenting hands of a clock. Henry Bemis, a charter member in the fraternity of dreamers. In the episode we enter into the life of Henry Bemis (played by the great Hollywood actor, Burgess Meredith whose popularity skyrocketed following this episode, leading to several more appearances in future episodes of The Twilight Zone). “Time Enough At Last” is a parody of the modern drive toward productivity, anti-intellectualism, and the struggle to find quietude and space to simply read books. Bradbury later submitted several scripts for The Twilight Zone however the only episode he is credited with creating is “I Sing the Body Electric” in Season 3. The story was initially released and published in If Magazine in 1953, the same year that Ray Bradbury published Fahrenheit 451. “Time Enough At Last” is based on a short story of the same name by American writer Lynn Venable (it is this story for which she is most fondly remembered). It is the first episode not to be a wholly unique creation from the mind Rod Serling. “Time Enough At Last” is an absolute classic of The Twilight Zone. There was-was all the time I needed…! It’s not fair! It’s not fair!” Star Wars Eclipse could spend it development another 3-4 years, with parts of it being potentially outsourced. One of the source claims that Quantic Dream might again be looking for a buyer in order to get the resources to create a new engine. However, Quantic Dream does not have a playable build at the moment, mainly due to the problems with the engine. To date, Star Wars Eclipse has been in development for about 18 months.Finding talent is allegedly difficult due to the reports of the unhealthy atmosphere in the studio. Right now, Quantic Dream has posted around 60 job listings, which is more than 30% of the current headcount of its Paris studio. Development is further complicated by staffing problems.Adding multiplayer, which is supposedly the plan, is also problematic for the same reason. The development of Star Wars Eclipse is currently facing trouble with Quantic Dream’s engine which is still unable to support open spaces and a large number of unscripted NPCs with complex AI.The game is set during the High Republic and is in early development. To that effect, Quantic Dream pitched the idea Lucasfilm, which liked it. At The Game Awards 2021, Lucasfilm Games announced the next project, called Star Wars: Eclipse. The studio, however, still wanted to make another large-scale project and decided to revisit Project Karma. Most of them were canned, with the exception of mobile game Spellcaster and Dreamland, a game set in the medieval fantasy world. At the same time, the studio explored ideas for smaller projects. However, the toxic work environment allegations picked by media made it impossible to find a buyer. Some sources claim that the deal might have allowed the studio to improve its proprietary tech beyond only making cinematic games. At around this time, the management of Quantic Dream allegedly considered selling the company. The studio did not return to Project Karma until around 2020, when it broke free of PlayStation exclusivity. The studio then pursued another another project, which later evolved into Detroit Become Human. The pitch might have also been turned down by Sony because Quantic Dream’s proprietary engine could not work for a game featuring large unconfined levels. Sony, however, did not greenlight the concept deeming it too large-scale for the studio. Project Karma should have been a big and ambitious game with plans to add several multiplanetary systems for players to explore. The studio pitched it to Sony after the release of Beyond Two Souls. The game was conceived back in 2013 and was originally called Project Karma. No playable build of Star Wars Eclipse exists at the moment. According to Henderson’s sources, the concept for the project was created back in 2013 years ago and has only recently been transformed into a Star Wars title.
